Off to the beach

Since my oldest daughter is leaving for college next Thursday and my youngest daughter starts K5 six days after that, we decided to go to the beach.  The little one had never been, I hadn’t been in about 20 years.  So, on Monday, David stayed home from work, we packed all our gear into the trusty Caddy, and headed for the beach.

It was the sort of perfect day you always dream about…the kind that makes life worth living.  David came home with a vicious sunburn but it didn’t detract from the fun we had….just tarnished his memory of it a bit, perhaps.  The small one was slathered in sunblock, so she escaped without so much as a single tan line.  We came home with a whole bucket full of shells and a mile of smiles.

I’d forgotten how much I loved the beach.  I used to go all the time as a teenager…with a group of close friends.  I spent a lot of time there when I lived in California as well.  When I lived in Viet Nam, you could see the South China Sea at the end of our driveway.  The beach has figured prominently in all stages of my life.

So, why have I stayed away for so long?  The beaches in Florida, past about 1985, were too crowded, too dirty and lacked parking.  The one time I tried to take the kids….total disaster.  There was a red tide warning out and the beach was littered with dead fish and buzzards.  And we had tried to find parking for 45 minutes for THAT.  We left unceremoniously and never returned.

This time, we found parking across the street from the beach within minutes.  The beach was clean, uncrowded, the waves soothing, the water just chilled enough to cool us off from the 110 degree heat index.  We all loved it so much that I think, once this house sells, we might consider moving to the beach.  It would be worth the extra drive to and from work and school to be able to sit on our own deck and watch the waves.  It would be worth it to NOT be in Hertford anymore.

Here are a few pictures to make you jealous.
